The first one's from ever-informative Nathan Bransford who is arguing that agents are normally on the author's side when it comes to dealing with publishers (but then Mr. Bransford comes across to me as a likeable, honest guy, so maybe I'm biased).
Here's another side of the publishing coin: Roz Morris is responding to a traditionally published author's snipe that indie authors have no right to help each other out (or at least that's how I read it).
Then two highly entertaining reads: The Guardian held a competition asking people to write the ending to the Harry Potter series on *****'s death (I won't write whose death, just in case you don't want a spoiler) in the style of different authors (I just loved the Terry Pratchett imitation).
And finally, the Bulwer-Lytton contest - for the worst novel openings - winners for 2012 have been announced. Oh dear, the Purple Prose winner....
Wouldn't want to win that contest!
ReplyDeleteYum... cold cuts and peaches for supper, I think (both furry...)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links. I haven't had much time to surf on the net much so this makes it a bit easier. (: And I stopped by the Bulwer-Lytton contest site, so funny, had a good laugh! :D
ReplyDeleteAlex - I think they're made up. Ew, Julia :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad you laughed Elise - I did too.
Thank you for the links!

Great links. I always love reading the worse novel openings.
ReplyDeleteWOW! Lots of stuff going on! Thanks for the links!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Gina. They are funny Annalisa - one day I'm going to try and write one. Thanks Leigh!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the roundup. Off to check one of them now.
ReplyDeleteCool stuff! :)
ReplyDeleteThe contest about ******'s death reminds me of these alternative versions of The Lord of the Rings.
Thanks for the links. I love the way we all share such great info. Our community rocks!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan .. I'll have to pop over to these - the Lord of the Rings thing .. I couldn't quite get my head into .. but perhaps then the little grey cells weren't so full of imagination!
ReplyDeleteCheers Hilary
Thanks JL. Oh I love that link GE. You're right Melissa, we do share stuff. Thanks Hilary!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links!
ReplyDeleteI like those types of blog posts, too. So thanks for providing one today.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I myself think it's fine for writers to help other writers, indie or not.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post and links. Why on earth shouldn't we help each other out? I help traditional and Indie authors. No snobbery in my world!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links. What's that about indie authors not allowed to help each other? How does that stack up then?
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeletePleasure Christine. Me too Susan - we can't always be trawling the internet for snippets so it's good when someone does it for you. Absolutely, Cynthia, Glynis and Rosalind - I'm a firm believer in authors helping other authors out, no matter who they are. Correct, Glynis - no snobbery in my world either.
ReplyDeleteHi Lynn!
I definitely wouldn't want to win that last contest . . the rest sound like fun reads!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I think I'll check out the Purple Prose and hope I don't see something that looks like my first page.
ReplyDeleteLOL Tyrean - as long as your story doesn't start with "it was a dark stormy night" you'll be OK. It's always worrying, Jenn.
ReplyDeleteFun snippets of other blogs. I love it when other bloggers highlight someone else. It certainly broadens my horizons. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI use to follow the first blog all the time. The other two are new to me, so thanks for the links.
ReplyDeleteSelf-published authors shouldn't help each other? Wow, that's harsh.
ReplyDeleteTraditionally published authors help each other out, so why can't self published author help other SPAs? I assume it's okay for TPA to help out SPA, and vice versa, right? :D
ReplyDeleteThanks farawayeyes - I too like highlights. You're welcome Ciara. Diane and Stina - I can't believe either that author said that SPA (including small press published too, I presume) authors can't help each other out. It's bigotry, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links.
ReplyDeleteA contest for the worst novel openings? My word! I never knew that existed.
What's with the SPA-TPA conflict? Seems like there's a whole lot of unnecessary snobbery/bigotry going around in the publishing circles...
Hi Susan- just came over from Morgen's forum. I don't think I've visited you before, but I did the A-Z thing. Maybe it was a different list.
