having trouble with my alphabet).

I was such a good student that I took this to heart, perhaps a tad too much. See, I have a little problem, auntie, in that I often
sound like I'm spraying my readers with a machine-gun. Is there a cure?
There sure is.
Try the "crescendo" effect, that is: short/short/shortish/long.
The vicar looked strained. The usual smile was missing. Mrs. Parrot had no idea what might be the matter. But she was determined to get to the bottom of it before going home that night.
That works - read it out loud.
Thanks auntie. It reminds me of that joke: What are a parrot's favorite literary characters? Mr. Macawber and Pollyana. Hey! I should've called this post the Parrot Joke.
There'll be more on sentence structure coming very soon (probably under "s").
